I used to be a college student and I’ve never bought a text book in my entire life. You might think, because of the title of this article, “Oh, that’s because you rented.” Wrong! Book rental was in its early days when I was at college and I’d never even heard of the concept before.
Now I was dirt poor when I was at college. I mean, really truly below poverty line broke. I received a very small income of which three quarters went on rent. My parents couldn’t help me at all and lived more than five hours away. I subsisted on plain white rice and bags of tomatoes with the occasional treat of a $2 frozen family size Chocolate Bavarian dessert which I would eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner one day a week... Yum! So you can see I had no extra cash to fork out for $100 plus text books!
So what did I do? I got by as best I could without books. And it really sucked. Text books can be pretty helpful. You can refer to them when you are confused or need clarification. My college library had copies of the text books I needed but you couldn’t take them out of the library. It’s very hard when you are writing an assignment in the middle of the night and you need something from the text book... which you don’t have... and the library is closed... Frustrating.
I’ve recently discovered text book rental. Wow! This would have made my life so much easier. It’s so much cheaper than buying! And when you are finished with the text, you can just send it back... I admit, I did buy one text book in my entire college career, from my next door neighbour for half price. Once I finished that class, I didn’t know what to do with it, so I kept it for use as a door stop.
While book rental for college is a great idea, the latest is E-Book rental for college. So you don’t even have to worry about delivery fees or lugging a heavy hard copy book to and fro. Load it up on your tablet and you are right to go! It’s great to have options and alternatives to buying. Who knows, maybe text book prices will even come down so it’s easier to buy them again...
While I’m no longer studying, I love having the option to try book rental for college.
