Hence it is imperative to include Anti Bullying activities as a major factor in any School Safety Plan. It is always desirable to develop such activities within the Character Education curriculum.
All teachers should also be trained on bullying and tactics to deal with such an insidious problem. All anti bullying campaigns in schools should include posters, wristbands and T-Shirts related to anti bullying. Anti bullying programs should also aim at educating other school staff members and make them knowledgeable about bullying and its principal signs.
Bullying not only happens in American schools alone, it is occurring in almost all schools overseas as well. It is our responsibility to ensure that our kids receive proper and appropriate education without any fear and apprehension. District, local and state administrators should legislate laws that will help to deal and eradicate bullying in schools on a system wide level.
Children who are victims of bullying subsequently lose their self-esteem and often become sluggish and anti social as proved through various recent schools shootings. Bullying also affects a kid’s future and his career. They intentionally skip their classes or are in a state of fear every time they leave their school at the end of the day. They won’t be able to focus on their school work even after returning home. Bullying is not limited in schools alone. It happens at workplaces as well.
Character Education which includes Anti bullying programs and campaigns must be the main concern, not an addendum to the long list of rules considered appropriate by school authorities. One thing that should be taken into consideration is the people who formulate this School Safety Plan and strategies never should’ve set foot in today’s school situation. Hence, we should consider people like teachers, guidance counselors, parent coordinators, school aides and para professionals who have faced such real life situations to School Safety Plan devising committee. They are more aware of the affects bullying has on students.
To conclude, anti bullying programs and activities in Character Education should be delineated by those who deal with it on a daily basis. Teachers and guidance counselors should listen to the problems faced by children and advise them on a regular basis. These are the people who can pioneer character education programs or campaigns and set rules and regulations that will ultimately help to put an end to this vindictive issue.
Academic instruction isn’t the only responsibility teachers have in today’s classrooms. More and more, teachers are being called on to teach students about values ... things like making good decisions, the showing of respect, taking responsibility, choosing friends, and having a positive attitude. It’s a responsibility that could be overwhelming, considering the limited hours available in a school day, the number of kids in the classroom, and the diversity of backgrounds and personalities each child represents.
