Past lives reincarnation is a theory whereby the soul goes through reincarnation and other births; the Hindu religion dictates that this happens because of karma (the deeds one does during one's life) and the soul or athma.
Hindu religious scriptures dictate that the soul does not die, and only changes from one form to the next, and just as one might change clothes that have worn out for newer ones.
The theory of past life regression defined in Hindu philosophy differs from that of Christians, which is based on the resurrection of Christ.
In Hinduism, the soul can inhabit any form, woman, man, even animal. The karma, or deeds of the human being, dictate what the next life will hold for that person.
There are several Hindu scriptures that talk about past life reincarnations. Most notably is the Bhrigu Sanhita, a scripture that supposedly held an accounting of all future and past births for current souls living. Unfortunately, this scripture no longer exists, and has been lost to time.
In regard to modern-day reincarnation theory, Dr. Ian Stevenson has collected some compelling data. Even though modern science scoffs at the idea of past lives reincarnation, Dr. Stevenson believed in it. Therefore, although it can't be said that his data is the most respected scientific data on the theory, it's very famous and his cases are very well documented because Dr. Stevenson held a degree in medicine and was a psychiatrist.
Unlike the current breed of past life regression therapists; Dr, Stevenson did not use any type of induced trance or hypnosis on his subjects; rather his collection of data is entirely and strictly based on children who had a spontaneous recollection of the incidents in their past life.
One of the most puzzling and famous of these involves a young boy just six years old. He was from a tiny village in Punjab, and he said that he had been a man named Satnam Singh.
This young boy had never been to what he said was the man's home village of Chakkchela and had never lived there, even though he could describe the place with amazing.
Inspite of the family's efforts to stop him fom claiming he was Satnam, he went on doing it. He knew his father's name and he also revealed the fact that he had died in a motorcycle accident while he was returning home from his school.
This claim was investigated and was indeed found to be true, that a man named Satnam Singh had indeed been killed thusly. The boy also revealed other intimate details about the man's family that checked out to be true. The final proof was when the man's handwriting was compared to the young boy's, and they proved identical.
Another popular incident from Stevenson's collection is that of a little girl named Swarnalata who was three years old. She claimed to be a young woman called Biya pathak.
The child could describe in perfect detail the house she had lived in as the young woman, and even took her father there when they were out and about one day. The child not only said that she had lived there, but that they could get a better cup of tea in the house than they could on the road.
Further, the little girl recognized Biya's brother and even called him by his pet name in front of nine people.
One can find dozens of such cases in Stevenson's documents. He also states that sometimes people have birthmarks which coincide with injuries or accidents they received in previous lives.
This was indeed borne out in one of his cases on a man from Thailand, who recalled that he was in fact his own deceased maternal uncle, reincarnated. This man had a scar on his head that matched the location where his maternal uncle had been wounded with a knife and had died as a result.
Yet another case was that of a boy who remembered himself as a man named MahaRam in his past life. Being shot at very close range killed this man, and the boy indeed had several birthmarks that looked like scars from gunshot wounds on his chest.
Many psychiatrists are in agreement that past life regression or the concept of rebirth may exist, most notably Dr. Brian Weiss, who is considered the modern father of past life regression. Nonetheless, science remains very skeptical about this concept.
It's also worth noting here, however, that when people do undergo past life regression therapy, they often suddenly dispense with lifelong fears and phobias.
