Every high school and college student is probably aware that doing well on essay tests is a key component of academic success. If you are presently a student, then it is extremely important to learn how to write good essays, not just on one test but again and again. If you are looking for some tips that will help you to become a better essay writer, then read on, and I will give some guidelines for essay writing.
1. Begin each exam with a close look at the test and make a plan. Instead of writing at once, it is very important to read all of the questions and make a careful note of how many questions there are and whether there are any choices that you can make. Without a careful look at the test and without an idea of what you have to do there is a chance that you could even leave out a question or two. I know because it happened to me once!
2. Plan your essay in advance and allocate your time. After you have gone through all the questions, and know how many parts there are to the test, then divide your available time so that you do not spend too much time on any one question. Bring a watch with you because you can never be sure if a wall clock will be easy to see. In addition to budgeting your time, it is also wise to plan your answer in advance. A simple outline of the points that you are going to write about can help you a lot. Once you have the outline, start writing and stay within the budgeted time for each question.
3. Start off with a good introductory paragraph. Your first few sentences can influence the whole essay, either positively or negatively. So start it right by restating the question and then give a sketch of how you are going to tackle the question. This introductory paragraph will prepare the teacher for what is coming next and it will also help guide you through the next part of the essay.
4. Demonstrate your knowledge of the course material. In the main body of the essay, following the opening and before the conclusion, you have to show that you are familiar with what was taught in the classes and what was covered in the reading assignments. If you express any opinions on the subject, then it is important to back your ideas up with references to other authors, books and authorities in your field. Don't try to cover up your deficiencies with flowery language. Rather it is better to concentrate on what you remember and what you really know about the topic.
5. Write simply but intelligently. In order to do well on any essay test it is important to prepare and assimilate the course material, but it is also important to be able to communicate clearly and efficiently. It is not a good idea to use or misuse terms that you are not familiar with. Make it easy for your instructor to read your essay, and remember that she might have 40 other essays to read as well!
6. Conclude your essay with confidence. Sum it all up in the end. You can refer to your introductory paragraph and then show how your answered the question. Your final sentence or sentences should be clear and give the instructor an idea that you know what you are talking about.
Essay writing is something that you will have to work on throughout your academic life. However, if you follow these tips you may end up with an essay writing skill that will not only help you during your school years, but will remain with you as a valuable asset during your entire life.
