Jazz guitarist Larry Coryell is the son of two accomplished pianists. He began mastering the piano at the age of 4. At the age of 12 he began to play the ukulele and after that the guitar. In 1950 his family transferred from Texas to Richmond, Washington and there at the age of 15 he joined a rock and roll group. He began getting tutoring from a guitar teacher who introduced him to the recordings of jazz guitarists Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery and Tal Farlow. Whilst Coryell was learning journalism at the University of Washington, Seattle, he decided that he would make a profession out of performing on jazz guitar. At first he played in and close to Seattle but then in 1965 transferred to New York city.

His first significant job in New York city was in 1966 with drummer Chico Hamilton's Quintet. In 1967 he became part of a band led by vibraphonist Gary Burton. Through his appearances and recordings with this group Coryell's ability quickly acquired global recognition. In 1968 Coryell left Burton determined to lead his own group. This he did in 1969 naming the combo "Foreplay".

In 1970 he released the now famous "Spaces" recording with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billy Cobham. In 1973 he formed his very famous jazz-rock group "Eleventh House". This showcased Mike Mandel, Randy Brecker and Alphonse Mouzon. In 1975, right after this band broke up, Coryell decided to concentrate on playing acoustic guitar. He toured Europe that year performing solo guitar. In 1976 he formed a guitar duo with Philip Catherine. They toured and recorded together till 1977.

In 1978 Larry Coryell toured internationally with guitar performers John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia. In 1979 he recorded with bassist Charlie Mingus and additionally with guitar player John Scofield. By the mid 1980s he was performing on electrical guitar once more with a trio made up of drummer Alphonse Mouzon and bass guitar player Bunny Brunel. Close to this time he transcribed for guitar and made a recording of some Stravinsky ballets for the Japanese label Nipon Phonogram. This album grew to become a best seller in Japan. Larry Coryell's recent records prove that he is among the most important and most superb, jazz fusion guitar players of the last 40 years.

Julian Coryell is the son of famed jazz guitar performer Larry Coryell. He first played the piano at the age of 5 and also studied the violin, viola, bass and drums.
