The teacher needs to question whether the activity is an efficient and effective way of delivering the learning objective. This is also dependant on the clarity of the teacher's explanation. Poor explanations lead to a poor response by the child which then leads to poor behaviour. Explanations which pupils understand lead to high levels of engagement and good pace in the learning.
The timing of the activity is also important. Activities which are highly interactive need to take place in the morning when the child and teacher have the greatest energy.
The nature of the activity and the tools used to deliver it are also an important consideration. For example, children respond well to work on money and measures such as working with a budget or a problem involving area because they are able to relate the activity to the outside world. Children enjoy activities involving a computer such as presenting information in tables and charts. They enjoy working with the interactive white board as it gives them a more visual and dynamic representation of the work.
Different activities are suited to different abilities of the group. Weaker children may struggle with multi-step activities and word problems. More able children respond better to complex, less repetitive tasks where they are challenged and made to think.
The activity needs to involve all the children and this can only happen if it supports the teachers approach to learning

This requires the teacher to be confident to deviate from any written plans and confident using the activity. The class then works together on the activity with their solutions being regularly reviewed. In this way the class is kept together and all the children can take part in discussing the solutions to problems. The teacher performs as if they were conducting an orchestra and the children as instruments, hopefully all playing the same tune!!
