Jazz guitarist Martin Taylor began to play the guitar at the age of 4. His dad, Buck Taylor, bought him a half-size guitar and exposed him to the recordings of Django Reinhardt. By the time he was 12, Taylor was performing in his dad's combo in the London area.

Taylor left school at the age of 15. He was already a guitarist of great expertise and in 1971 was hired to perform in the Lennie Hastings Band. In 1972 he joined the Harry Bence Band for two years working for the Cunard Cruise Line on ships cruising out of New York. On his return to London Taylor teamed up with Ike Isaacs, who at that time was among the greatest British studio and jazz guitarists. His affiliation with Isaacs, and other London based jazz musicians, helped Taylor achieve the virtuoso technique and fantastic musicality he now displays with such natural ease. He began to acquire wide recoginition through his appearances in London jazz spots in a guitar duo with Ike Isaacs. In 1979 he replaced Diz Disley in Stephane Grappelli's quartet soon after Disley broke his wrist in a road accident. A long association with Grappelli started. Taylor appeared in live performances all over the world together with the legendary jazz violinist. He also made quite a few recordings, television and radio broadcasts alongside Grappelli.

Since that time Martin Taylor has been recognised as one of the greatest jazz guitar players to have appeared on the international scene in recent years. In 1981 he recorded for Concord Records in California. Following that he toured the USA 5 times, teaming up with the late Emily Remler for two coast to coast tours. Taylor has toured extensively and recorded with clarinetist Buddy De Franco. For 2 years (1986 - 1987) he toured all through Europe and the United Kingdom with the brilliant Irish guitarist, Louis Stewart. In more recent occasions Taylorappeared with Barney Kessel and Charlie Byrd as a member of their "Great Guitars" trio.

Martin Taylor has also developed a phenomenal right hand fingerstyle technique, as well as the normal pick technique, so that he now rather frequently records as a solo artist. His unique double-thumbing right hand technique allows him to play walking bass lines, underneath complicated jazz chords, with the same speed as a good stand-up jazz bass player. As a matter of fact, a lot of folks listening to Martin's solo guitar recordings for the first time presume that he is playing alongside a stand-up bass player! His incredible skills have made Martin Taylor one of the most sought after jazz performers in the world today. He can be seen regularly on just about every continent at top jazz clubs and festivals. He has also won the "Top Guitarist Award" in the annual British Jazz Awards over and over again, year after year since 1987!
