We all know the things we should put on a resume like experience, education, special skills, our contact information, but rarely do we hear about those things that should be left off of a resume. And, unfortunately, there are some pieces of information that regularly find their way onto resumes that really should have no place there.
In the worst case scenario, these unnecessary pieces of information could potentially cost you the job of your dreams, so it is important to leave those tidbits out when using an online service to create a free resume. Your new, clutter free resume might be just the ticket to giving you the edge to land your new job.
Never include details of what you didn't like about your old job. A common question in interviews is the reason why you left your last job. Never be negative about the reasons you left, and never put those reasons on your resume. That information does not need to be divulged until it is asked directly of you, and it could make you look like a bitter and disgruntled employee. Don't sully your image by being negative or derogatory towards past employers, especially not on your resume before anyone even meets you.
Don't include irrelevant past work experience. Although you may have worked at a fast food restaurant as a teenager, your potential employer in marketing doesn't need to know. Only include job experience related to the job you are vying for. Make sure you include the things you accomplished at those related jobs, so that you can show your potential employer the results you get as a productive and focused employee.
Be careful about embellishing your work experience or education. It is tempting to mold yourself to the exact candidate that the potential employer is looking for, but unfortunately if it isn't true; don't put it on your resume. It will eventually be found out that you don't have a bachelor's degree or experience with a large firm, and you'll most likely lose your job or be scrapped as a candidate for the job. Only include truthful statements about your past experience and it should be enough to get you hired.
Creating a free resume online is a great way to express yourself as a potential employee to employers to get you hired. Simply stick to the facts and be decisive, and your resume is sure to be noticed.
