The theory of past lives reincarnation and other births that the soul goes through is dictated by the Hindu philosophy of karma (deeds) and athma (soul).
According to the Hindu religious scriptures, the soul is indestructible and it merely changes its form or body the way a human being changes his clothes after they have outlived their useful years.

Several scriptures and the Hindu religion talk about past lives reincarnation extensively. Notably, a major one of these is the Bhrigu Sanhit, which apparently had an accounting of the future and past lives for all living souls. This scripture has been lost over the centuries, however.
The most convincing modern account of past life reincarnation is that of Dr.Ian Stevenson. Though modern science dismisses past regression therapy by claiming it has no scientific evidence; Dr Stevenson's work was well received as he had a medical and psychiatric degree.
Unlike today's past life regression therapists, though, Dr. Stevenson didn't put his patients into trance or hypnotize them. Instead, he interviewed children who had spontaneous recollections of the incidents they experienced in their past lives.
Most noted and perplexing among these cases was that of a small child, a boy, six years old, from a small village in Punjab. This child claimed that he had been a man named Satnam Singh.
He could even minutely described the man's village of of Chakkchela; that was true even though the child had never been there.
The family tried to dissuade this, but the boy nonetheless continued to claim that he was this man, and even reveal the name of the man's father. He said that he had been killed in a motorcycle accident on his way home from school.
Later investigations revealed that these facts were infact true. Someone called Satnam Singh had lived in that village. The manner of his death was also exactly as he had described it. But the most surprising event came when the boy's handwriting matched that of Satnam singh.
Another popular account of past lives reincarnation from the Stevenson collection was that of Swarnalata, a girl of 3 years who remembered her past life as that of a young woman named Biya Pathak.
She could vividly described the house that she lived in. In fact, when she and her father were traveling one day, she led her father directly to the property and even said that she had lived in the area; further, she said that they could get a better cup of tea in that house than they could on the road.
What sealed this case was that the little girl recognized Biya Pathak's brother, and called him by a pet name from among nine people.
Stephenson lists dozens of these cases in his documentation. He also says that if an injury is caused by trauma in the last birth, it can become a birthmark in the next one.
A man from Thailand seemed to illustrate this; he recollected that he was his own deceased maternal uncle, reincarnated. And indeed, this man had a scar on his head that was located in the exact same place as a knife wound his uncle had died from.
Another case from Stevenson's files was very astonishing as well; with that, a little boy claimed that he was a man named MahaRam; MahaRam had been shot and killed at very close range, in the chest. What was amazing was that this young boy displayed birthmarks on his chest that looked like gunshot wound scars.
Many psychiatrists, including Dr. Brian Weiss, the father of modern past life regression, as well as several other prominent authorities on psychiatry and psychology, believe there may be such a thing as rebirth; however, science is still mostly skeptical about it.
