Today, I saw my daughter scratching her head over and over again. Then, I saw her turning her head side to side, looking really confused of something that I don't really know. So, the mom that I am, I approached her and saw pictures of very queer looking plants. With a grin in her face, she sheepishly told me to help her understand the idea of carnivorous seeds and its plants. This time, it became my turn to look really and anxiously confused. This is then our discovery of carnivorous seeds and their plants.
Carnivorous seeds are actually those seeds that produce plants that get most of their nutrients from trapping or consuming animals, insects or other arthropods. They usually adapt towards soil that are poorer in its nutrients. Due to these, carnivorous plants are very rare but other than poor nutrients in soil, the place should have sunlight and water freely available for the plants. Carnivorous plants have already amounted to around 700 sorts and they are also popular in their own means.
There are basically 5 trapping mechanisms found in carnivorous plants: pitfall traps, flypaper traps, snap traps, bladder traps, and lobster-pot traps. Each mechanism has its own style in trapping their prey; it can be active or passive relying on whether the trapping mechanism depends on the movement of its prey. The said plant's ways of changing its leaf shape makes it less efficient at photosynthesis. Such is the job of a growing Venus flytrap. The energy the plant uses in building and perfecting its trap becomes a measure of the carnivory of the trap. The Venus flytrap doesn't care on death and dying but only to achieve its growth potential through the usage of nutrients by other Creations.
Carnivorous seeds grow usually in wild habitats where there is rich in prey. It can never be in a city or home, however these plants are nowadays very singular that wildlife is trying to protect it in any way they could.
At last, the confusion has subsided and together with my daughter, we finally understood almost everything about carnivorous seeds and the plant that they produce. We may not understand why such Creation was made but we do understand that carnivorous seeds were made to produce carnivorous plants so as to balance nature and give more color to Mother Earth. I saw my daughter's eyes enlighten with the knowledge that we received and what a joy it is to learn with her!
