As more and more use of ID cards is becoming the norm of the day because security issues are really becoming more important than days of yore, the need of an ID system where security is the prime issue and the whole system of printing, issuing and keeping records is looked after fully. Just printing ID cards and issuing them does not serve the true purpose of secure access since it is not very difficult to print fraudulent ID cards that are authentic looking. So, how is security guaranteed in high risk areas? High risk areas have to be made secure using an elaborate ID system that has many checks and counter-checks and a high-tech verification system that is not easy to fool.
Creating a Fool-Prof ID System
A lot of care needs to be taken to design an ID system of some value. Almost always it is custom designed to completely satisfy the particular requirement of the organization for which it is created. Another reason why the ID system needs to be custom -designed is because specific issues have to be addressed which may or may not exist elsewhere. Yet the salient features of an ID system are more or less the same. It is also important to study the process of entry and exit and also the possibilities where security could be breached before designing the ID system of a place or an event.
For example, in every ID system it is important to keep secure records of ID cards issued. ID cards have to be printed in-house using a secure printer that has restricted access. Any loss of ID card has to be immediately reported and record of such loss and replacement has to be carefully maintained. ID card verification system has to be rigorous and has to follow all rules that have been laid down for the purpose. In a high security ID system, it is advisable to use non-standard ID card consumables that are difficult to duplicate. The design and printing format also must be difficult to copy. In short, everything should be done to make it as difficult as possible to copy the ID cards that are issued as part of the system. Thus the printer and the software that controls the system should be high-tech and very expensive to get.
High risks areas where a high-tech ID system has to be placed could nuclear installations, high security research laboratories, government mints and currency printing presses, headquarters of the armed forces, venues where high-level conferences and talks are being held between heads of governments, international sports events and many more.
All these above mentioned places have different variables regarding the number of persons being allowed access, number and security of entry and exit points and the budget that is sanctioned to get a highly secure ID system in place.
