The history of Lanyards goes a long way and whenever an important object had to be carried on the person, lanyards have been used so that the important thing does not get lost. Officially too lanyards were used in armed forces and are still seen to decorate uniforms. Lanyards are basically a piece of string or cord that can hold a key or some arms or an object such as ID card etc. so that it does not get lost and can be worn round the neck. Lanyards in the navy are cables that are used to secure objects to the ship.
History of Lanyards:
Lanyards have been used for ages and the exact date of the origin of lanyards is not known, however, lanyards were used in the army by officers to carry small arms such as a pistol or sword or even a whistle and secure them to the epaulet of the uniform or the pocket of the uniform. The lanyards in armed forces would be cords that are so long that even when the sword or the pistol was taken out of the holster, it could be comfortably handled and easily attached or detached from it. Now lanyards used in armed forces are mere decorations but part of the uniform.
Modern day lanyards are used for a simpler purpose; to hold ID cards so that they can be worn around the neck to prevent loss or to be checked for identity. These modern lanyards are of plastic ribbon or cord or braid of colored satin, silk or fabric. The plastic ID card can have a hole through which the lanyard cord or braid can be passed and it can be worn like a necklace around the neck. Lanyards can be printed or woven on looms to give distinct designs such company logos etc. Such lanyards are used at exhibitions, conferences etc. where participants are expected to wear their badges with names attached to the lanyards.
Schools and educational institutions, hospitals, prisons, corporate offices, airport areas etc. can be some such places where ID cards can be attached to lanyards for better visibility. Use of different colored lanyards for different categories of people can further make distinction easy. Hospitals can use different colored lanyards for patients, visitors and hospital staff to keep better control on entry of unauthorized persons.
Printed Lanyards are a marketing tool as they can have the name of the company that manufactures the gadget printed on the lanyards. Many companies give these printed lanyards free with the gadget itself so that the user does not need to create a lanyard to carry the gadget safely round his neck.
