There are millions of individuals who must deal with the burden of being an alcoholic. Some of these individuals never seek help and spend their entire lives in a state of despair. Alcoholism is a terrible disease that affects the alcoholic and everyone who cares about him. However, some alcoholics realize they need help to conquer their addiction. They may need more intensive therapy than Alcoholics Anonymous can provide. If this is the case, an inpatient treatment plan may be necessary. But what about after the treatment plan is over? Where do these people go? This is where we answer the question of what are alcohol halfway houses?
A halfway house is sometimes referred to as a recovery house. This is a facility in which recovering alcoholics can reside for a period of time after being released from an in-patient facility. The purpose of alcohol halfway houses is to allow individuals to make a gradual entrance back into society. Studies have shown that allowing people to stay in halfway houses instead of being thrust immediately back into society reduces the incidences of relapse back into alcoholism.
A recovering alcoholic can benefit from a stay in a halfway house because he will be living with other recovering addicts. His progress will be monitored by well-trained staff. A halfway house will provide structure, which is important for the recovering alcoholic. A house that uses the 12-step program for recovery is usually the best. The 12-step program is the foundation for Alcoholic’s Anonymous, and it is very successful.
Alcohol halfway houses are often located in good neighborhoods. The residents of the house are encouraged to seek employment, do volunteer work or go back to school. The great thing about living in the recovery house is there are no outside pressures of financial or personal obligations that can trigger a relapse.
Most of the halfway houses have rules and guidelines each resident must abide by. Here is an example of what the guidelines could be:
- No mind or mood-altering substances are allowed on the property at any time.
- You are not allowed to come on the property under the influence of any drink or drug. Otherwise you are allowed to come and go as you please.
- You will have to ask permission to bring guests into your apartment.
- You are responsible for your own cooking and cleaning.
- You will have to adhere to the aftercare plan developed for you.
- You must attend the 12 step meetings.
-You must actively pursue alternate housing for life outside of the halfway house.
So what are alcohol halfway houses? They are the alcoholic’s best chance for living a long and productive life.
