Spectrum Bands: How the latest Ofcom proposals will affect business communication
In simple terms, ‘Spectrum bands' are a collective phrase referring to the frequencies by which public (such as TV and radio) and private (such as SMS messaging) information is transferred from place to place. 1G or first generation refers to the original analogue technology sending information over these bands. More recently, second generation (2G) has given rise to test messaging and narrowband internet, and now third generation (3G) telecommunications technology has given birth to high speed broadband services allowing video downloads etc.

The next big step in terms of business communication looks to be coming from plans recently made by Ofcom. As reported by a range of technology sites such as PublicTechnology.net and ITProPortal.com, in 2009 the UK communications watchdog are likely to follow suit of other European countries and to open up the 800MHz to allow more room for other technologies such as mobile broadband. In order to do this, digital TV and wireless microphones will now move to lower frequencies.

Ofcom's plans have led many speculators to suggest that such moves will have positive affects for the business communications industry, in particular companies specialising in services such as Broadband, VoIP, and business telephones - and despite the current economic situation. A report by Ovum predicts that by 2013, there will 5.63 billion broadband connections world wide, a 43 percent increase since 2008.

Not only does it seem likely that the move will prove a big incentive for companies to invest in the technology the bandwidth is suitable for, but it seems there will also be a knock-on effect on technological advancements in that area, as companies push to improve speed and quality of service.

According to ITProPortal.com Ofcom has even put a price on the opening of the Spectrum bands, stating that ‘making the whole spectrum of 800MHz available could offer the benefits worth £2-3billion over the twenty years down the line, and the benefits could include more efficient use of spectrum and lower equipments costs, to enhanced opportunities for the next generation mobile broadband.'

Additionally, Ofcom are also calling for companies already using the frequencies in the 900MHz range to free up 10MHz of bandwidth each. These will be sold at auction, offering further opportunities for new services and names to make the most of third generation communications, and beyond. -- About the Author If you would like to find out more about business telephones then please visit http://www.maintel.co.uk/
